Dream Big! EVOLVE London

We were delighted to host our seventh EVOLVE workshop at The Place in London, in partnership with DCD Contributing Company Richard Alston Dance Company.

As put one of the participants, it was "a day filled with love, laughter and respect."

A thought provoking day, where we heard from DCD supported dancers about their own, personal experiences of transition. We're so grateful to Anna Lowe and Andrew Hurst who shared their stories with the participants.

"I'm here today for inspiration, perspective and self discovery." EVOLVE London participant

Our speakers:

Anna Lowe

“DCD’s support helps dancers in so many ways to find success and happiness beyond their performance careers. EVOLVE is an important space to bring dancers together to be inspired by the possibilities open to them – and be honest about the challenges. I’m delighted to be sharing my story and offering a real-life account of transition.”

Anna trained at Laine Theatre Arts graduating in July 1998.

She enjoyed a diverse and successful career as a professional dancer and actress for over 12 years for companies including: The National Theatre, RSC, Chichester Festival Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Menier Chocolate Factory, Stephen Joseph Theatre and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Anna also worked extensively in London’s West End as well as on tour in the UK and abroad.

At the beginning of 2011 she began re-training for a career in arts administration taking on an internship in the Development department at Shakespeare's Globe before going on to work as an intern and then as Culture Programme Coordinator for the London 2012 Festival and Cultural Olympiad as part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In 2013 Anna joined the British Council as Project Manager, UK/Russia 2014. Subsequent roles at the British Council have included Project Manager, Festivals & Seasons, Interim Head of UK/UAE 2017 and Senior Programme Manager, UK/Korea 2017-18.

Andrew Hurst

“As a DCD Supported Dancer, I am proud to share my story at EVOLVE London and to remind all dancers that they are not alone – all dancers experience career transition and it can be a truly exciting time to excel by applying their skills in new ways.”

Andrew trained at The Royal Ballet School and danced with Basel Ballet, Switzerland; Ballet Gulbenkian, Portugal; Netherlands Dance Theatre II, Holland; Berlin Ballet, Germany; and Rambert Dance Company. While at Rambert he was the Company Deputy for Equity, and began his management career there before taking up the position of General Manager at Phoenix Dance, where he led the Company through a period of change including a large capital project. He has a Masters Degree in Cultural Policy and Management, he has undertaken research into how personality factors influence success for professional dancers, and is qualified in the use of psychometrics and coaching for career counselling. Andrew is proud to be the Chair of Company Chameleon and Vice Chair of ArtsDepot. He is also Artistic Advisor to SpainNOW!, a senior Committee member at the Hospital Club, and a Board observer for The Royal Ballet Benevolent Fund.

Andrew become Chief Executive of One Dance UK in 2016 from the senior management team at The Royal Ballet where, since April 2009 and under the direction of Dame Monica Mason and Kevin O’Hare, he was responsible for the day- to-day operations of the Company, and more recently also for international activity including touring and wrap-around education and training programmes.
